Mayor John Collins announces his candidacy for U.S. Senate from Massachusetts.

June 10, 1966

Collins loses the Democratic nomination to Endicott “Chub” Peabody at the state convention in the War Memorial Auditorium. Collins, who had announced his candidacy on May 12, 1966, attributes his loss to the efforts of former state senate president John Powers, declaring in his concession speech, “I have learned tonight – and indeed the hard way – that you can’t always win when you’re fighting power politics.”
